Seacap, a capital partner for ports, and technology company Shorly – a spin-off from Havnekraft AS – today announce a strategic partnership. The objective is to support ports in transitioning to zero-emission and energy-efficient operations. By combining Seacap’s financial capacity with Shorly’s software and operational services, the partners offer an end-to-end solution spanning early-stage development and financing to operation, optimisation, and further development of green port infrastructure.
Shorly was established earlier this year to make the leading technology, experience, and expertise built up through Havnekraft’s shore power and energy infrastructure initiatives accessible to a broader market. Behind both Havnekraft and Shorly are Haugaland Kraft AS and Karmsund Port Authority (Karmsund Havn IKS), which have been instrumental in developing and operating port energy solutions for several years.
Removing barriers
The port sector faces strict and growing requirements regarding electrification, energy efficiency, and carbon emissions reporting. At the same time, technical complexity increases significantly as shore power systems, battery banks, and local energy infrastructure are integrated into fully functional systems. For many ports, this presents a major barrier where the need for capital expenditure meets the risk of selecting the wrong technological solutions.
“We see a clear demand for comprehensive solutions in the market, with many ports seeking a more predictable path through the green transition. Together with Shorly, we are forming a platform that covers the entire value chain, connecting capital directly with specialised technical and operational expertise. This enables ports to make the right long-term investment decisions while securing efficient and profitable operations over time,” says Styrk Bekkenes, Partner at Seacap.
Significant international potential
In the newly established Shorly, Havnekraft AS – a company with an established market position in shore power – has consolidated the software solutions and operational services developed over several years. These solutions are grounded in practical experience from developing, owning, and operating shore power installations and port energy infrastructure. The goal is to refine and position this expertise and technology for further growth.
“The expertise and software platform we have built possess significant international potential. Today, we have a fully operational software platform already in active use that can be offered to ports globally. The establishment of Shorly puts us in a stronger position to scale this offering,” says Vidar Riise, CEO of Shorly. He further clarifies that the company’s existing shore power installations, including infrastructure at Karmsund, will remain within Havnekraft AS.
Through the partnership with Seacap, the market position of both Shorly and Havnekraft will be further strengthened.
“Seacap brings a powerful combination of financial muscle, international experience, and an extensive network of ports and partners. This strengthens our ability to develop new solutions and reach more customers across the market,” says Riise.
A single partner across the full lifecycle
In practice, the collaboration between Seacap and Shorly means ports now gain access to an independent partner capable of managing the complete lifecycle of their energy infrastructure. This encompasses everything from initial advisory services in design, engineering, and execution, to financing and operating the shore power facilities themselves. Once the infrastructure is established, daily operations and maintenance are managed in close coordination with digital tools. At the core of the delivery are advanced energy management systems (EMS) for continuous monitoring and optimisation, featuring integration with third-party solutions and technology-neutral platforms.
Implementing these solutions provides ports with direct operational and financial upside. By adopting smart energy management, ongoing energy costs are systematically reduced, while automated billing and improved capacity utilisation unlock increased revenue from the facilities. Beyond commercial advantages, the solutions ensure ports can comply with tightening regulatory requirements. The result is a forward-looking platform that equips ports for secure, long-term electrification.
“Ports are rapidly evolving into energy hubs. Together with Shorly, we aim to take a leading role in this development and ensure ports gain access to robust, adaptable solutions built for the future,” says Styrk Bekkenes of Seacap.
