Fit for 55 introduces a number of measures that directly affect ship traffic and port infrastructure:<\/span><\/p>

  • The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is being extended to shipping, with a gradual phase-in where ships over 5,000 gross tons must pay for CO\u2082 emissions from 2024.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • FuelEU Maritime (sub-package):<\/span><\/p>

    • Calls for a gradual increase in the use of low- and zero-emission fuels in shipping<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • Mandatory shore power for passenger and container ships in major EU ports from 2030<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li>

    • Infrastructure requirements: Ports need to facilitate electrification, shore power and alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • CBAM (carbon tariffs) can affect ports indirectly, by changing the flow of goods and logistics solutions.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      In sum, this means that ports inside and outside the EU must invest in green infrastructure now – to be competitive, meet the requirements and attract emission-free vessels.
